2027 Election: Only a United Opposition Can Defeat Tinubu – Onovo Warns
LAGOS, As political gears begin to shift ahead of the 2027 general elections, former presidential candidate Martin Onovo has declared that no single opposition party can unseat President Bola Tinubu without a formidable coalition.
In a pointed critique of Nigeria’s fragmented opposition landscape, Onovo argued that only a united front such as the one being championed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other political heavyweights stands a real chance at defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in Lagos during an interview, Onovo, who contested under the now-defunct National Conscience Party in 2015, said:
“A united minority is stronger than a divided majority. If opposition parties can avoid internal sabotage, this coalition can claim 99% of the vote in 2027 and I say that with confidence.”
He credited himself as the “brain” behind the largest coalition in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, referencing the formation of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). According to him, the current political climate requires similar unity and strategic alignment.
Onovo, however, emphasized that unity alone would not suffice if internal power struggles, conflicting egos, and self-interest are allowed to derail the mission.
“The only obstacle to victory is self-sabotage. If done properly, this coalition will not fail,” he said.
Sharp Assessment of Tinubu’s First Year
Turning his attention to the Tinubu administration’s performance, Onovo delivered a scathing mid-term review. He stated that little had been achieved in critical areas such as security and social welfare, accusing the government of underdelivering on its campaign promises.
“The president needs to define clear objectives and focus on improving the lives of everyday Nigerians — from cities to the remotest villages. Right now, we’re not seeing that,” he said.
He advised President Tinubu to restructure his cabinet, replacing political loyalists with competent technocrats who can deliver measurable results in governance, security, and economic reforms.
“We must not sacrifice performance for loyalty. We need the right commanders, the right strategies, and an ethical environment. The president must take responsibility for delivering results,” Onovo added.
Call for Stronger Anti-Corruption Drive
The outspoken politician also took aim at Nigeria’s widening inequality and social tension, linking both to the country’s lingering insecurity. He urged the Tinubu administration to intensify its fight against corruption and implement policies that bridge the socio-economic divide.
“Reducing the inequality index must be a national priority. When people feel economically and socially excluded, they become vulnerable to violence, crime, and manipulation,” he concluded.
As the 2027 election cycle approaches, Onovo’s warning presents a sobering challenge to both the ruling party and a historically divided opposition. Whether the coalition can rise to the occasion or crumble under familiar pressure remains to be seen.
