Former Ekiti Governor Apologizes for APC’s Shortcomings Amid National Hardship
Former Ekiti State Governor John Fayemi has issued a public apology for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party’s failure to fulfill its promises to Nigerians, acknowledging the mounting economic hardships facing the nation.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Fayemi, who also served as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, admitted that the ruling party has fallen short of its commitments to the Nigerian people since taking power in 2015.
“We must apologize to the Nigerian people. We have not succeeded in achieving everything we promised,” Fayemi stated, citing structural impediments as partial factors in the party’s underperformance. “Clearly, we haven’t done enough to make life abundant for the Nigerian people, and for that, I would not hesitate to apologize.”
The APC’s decade-long governance, beginning with Buhari’s victory over then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has faced increasing criticism. Public sentiment suggests living conditions have deteriorated significantly during the party’s tenure.
The situation has particularly worsened since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, when his immediate removal of fuel subsidies triggered widespread economic hardship. This policy decision has reportedly pushed millions of Nigerians into poverty.
Fayemi emphasized that political leaders, including himself, bear responsibility for improving national conditions. “Those who see themselves in leadership positions should do better to move the country to a better place,” he concluded.
