Wike’s Desperate Power Play: The Futile Bid to Impeach Governor Fubara
The relentless power tussle in Rivers State has once again exposed former governor Nyesom Wike’s insatiable thirst for control. His latest attempt to undermine his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, through an impeachment plot orchestrated by his loyalists in the House of Assembly, reeks of political desperation. However, as activist Jake Epelle boldly declared, this futile scheme is doomed to fail.
Wike’s Contradictions and Hypocrisy
It is the height of hypocrisy for Wike to pretend to advocate peace while simultaneously fueling instability in Rivers State. By backing the Martins Amaewhule-led faction of the state’s House of Assembly in their brazen attempt to remove Fubara, Wike has revealed his true colors as a man unwilling to relinquish power.
“Let them go and try impeachment, they will not succeed,” Epelle declared during a television interview, dismissing Wike’s influence as an empty threat. He further emphasized that Fubara has not committed any impeachable offence, and Rivers people will not sit idly by and watch democracy trampled upon by power-hungry politicians.
Wike’s Meddling and the Abuja Connection
The unfolding political drama in Rivers State took another twist when Fubara was locked out of the Assembly Quarters while attempting to present the 2025 budget. The House of Assembly, clearly dancing to the dictates of external forces, denied any prior knowledge of the governor’s visit despite his official communication.
Epelle hinted at an external hand pulling the strings, stating, “I was told that at the point the governor was coming to the gate, they received a call from Abuja. Who made that call? I don’t know. But it’s a case of somebody beating the drum somewhere, and the state assembly people dancing to the beat.”
There is little doubt that Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is using his federal influence to undermine the democratic process in Rivers State. His assertion in Abuja that there is “nothing wrong” with Fubara’s impeachment only confirms his desperation to maintain a stranglehold on the state.
The People’s Resistance Against Wike’s Tyranny
Wike’s tactics are not new. He has a history of bullying political opponents into submission. However, Rivers people are no longer willing to be pawns in his game of political dominance. The governor’s supporters have vowed to resist any unlawful impeachment, standing firmly behind Fubara in this fight for democracy.
The message is clear: Rivers State is not Wike’s personal empire. His era of unchecked control is over, and any attempt to subvert the will of the people will be met with fierce resistance. The ongoing political crisis should serve as a warning to all anti-democratic elements that the people of Rivers State will not allow their mandate to be hijacked by self-serving politicians.
Wike’s Impotent Threats
Despite Wike’s bluster, his political maneuvering is fast losing credibility. His grip on the Rivers State Assembly may give him an illusion of power, but he cannot unilaterally impose his will. As Epelle rightly pointed out, Wike has no constitutional authority to impeach a governor. His threats amount to nothing more than a desperate cry for relevance in a state that is ready to move on from his overbearing influence.
The days of godfatherism in Rivers politics must come to an end. Governor Fubara has a mandate to govern, and any attempt to usurp that mandate through backdoor impeachment plots will ultimately fail. The people of Rivers State must remain vigilant and resolute in defending their democracy against Wike’s reckless and undemocratic schemes.
