FG to Fully Close Lagos Ijora Bridge for Repairs from April 27
The Federal Government has announced the complete closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos from April 27 to carry out critical structural repairs aimed at ensuring commuter safety and preventing long-term deterioration.
During an inspection on Monday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, revealed that the bridge—which links the Ijora Causeway to Apapa—is due for comprehensive bearing replacements beneath the deck.
“The bridge is entering the final phase of repairs, which involves lifting the entire deck to replace approximately 50 defective bearings across three key sections,” she said.
According to Kesha, this marks the first major rehabilitation work on the bridge since its construction decades ago. She acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may cause but emphasized that the intervention was urgent and unavoidable.
Planned Diversions for Smooth Traffic Flow
To manage potential gridlock, alternative routes have been planned. Motorists approaching from Ijora will be redirected through the Seven Up Roundabout to access Apapa, while heavy-duty vehicles will be diverted through Costain and Iganmu.
“We don’t foresee serious problems because diversion plans have been strategically mapped out,” she noted.
Kesha added that vibrations currently experienced on the bridge stem from severely weakened bearings, clarifying that while the bridge is not at immediate risk of collapse, urgent action is necessary.
Repairs to Be Executed in Phases
While the initial phase deck lifting and bearing replacement requires a full closure, subsequent works like asphalt replacement may be scheduled in stages, potentially on Sundays, to minimize disruption.
She reiterated that the Ministry of Works, under the directive of the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, is committed to public safety and awareness.
“We’ve received reports from concerned citizens about tremors on the bridge. We want Lagosians to know this closure is for their protection,” Kesha said.
The Federal Government appealed to the public for patience and cooperation, assuring that timely execution will restore the Ijora Bridge to optimal condition.
