IG Deploys Anti-Bandit Squads Nationwide to Combat Rising Insecurity

In a decisive move to tackle the escalating wave of violence across Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of special anti-bandit squads nationwide. The directive, issued on Tuesday during a strategic meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja, mandates that each squadron maintains at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on standby.

This directive comes as fresh attacks by bandits claimed at least 21 lives in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto States. Recent weeks have seen an uptick in deadly assaults in Plateau, Enugu, and other regions, prompting renewed urgency in Nigeria’s security approach.

“The PMF was created to be a swift and decisive strike force,” Egbetokun said. “From now on, all squadrons must have one combat-ready unit ready to support state commands during emergencies.”

He further announced quarterly training sessions focusing on ethics, professionalism, and operational excellence. The IG also revealed plans to reduce and restructure PMF squadron sizes to improve agility and accountability.

Effective immediately, PMF commanders will be held accountable for their personnel’s conduct, with regular inspections and training programmes aimed at restoring discipline and respect for human rights.

Withdrawals from Escort Duties

Egbetokun reiterated the withdrawal of PMF officers from non-core duties such as personal escorts, stating that such deployments undermine tactical operations. He emphasized the need to channel resources toward curbing violent crime and restoring national security.

Renewed Attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto

Tragedy struck Ilesha Baruba in Kwara State, where gunmen killed six people at a motor park relaxation spot. A vigilante officer was also shot dead during patrol in Kaiama LGA. The Kwara Police Command confirmed the arrest of an informant linked to the attackers and vowed to intensify security operations in the area.

In Benue State, a notorious bandit known as “Government” killed 11 people in the Ukum Local Government Area. While some residents claimed the suspect had a history of mental illness, state officials dismissed the notion, labeling him a dangerous criminal. This comes just days after armed herders massacred 72 people in the region.

Meanwhile, Sokoto State witnessed another brutal assault as members of the Lakurawa terror group raided Adarawa and Huymar Dutsi villages, killing three people and looting livestock and shops. Gunmen also mounted a roadblock in the Gulbin Mujadde area, seizing animals from traders en route from Niger Republic.

Governors Demand Joint Action

Alarmed by the increasing violence, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has resolved to adopt a collaborative strategy. Gombe State Governor and Forum Chairman, Muhammadu Yahaya, is spearheading efforts to strengthen inter-state cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat banditry and terrorism.

Progress in Katsina

Katsina State Deputy Governor, Faruk Jobe, disclosed that the state’s investment of ₦36.8 billion in security infrastructure is beginning to yield positive results. The newly formed Katsina Community Watch Corps has been equipped with vehicles, drones, and other tactical gear. Over 7,500 religious leaders have also been engaged to preach peace, while support has been provided to victims of banditry.

Jobe emphasized that both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies are being employed, including legal reforms, community engagement, and victim support initiatives.

Federal Government’s Response

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, during a visit to Benue State, acknowledged that Nigeria’s insecurity crisis has festered for over a decade. He urged Nigerians to remain patient, assuring them that the Tinubu administration is committed to confronting the problem with renewed strategies and resolve.

“This is not about politics, religion, or ethnicity. It is pure criminality,” Ribadu stated, adding that the government has improved security efforts significantly compared to past administrations.
