Firefighters in Israel are working hard to stop big wildfires burning near Jerusalem for the second day in a row. These fires have been some of the worst in recent years, and there’s worry that strong winds could make things worse later today.
The good news is that the main highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem has been reopened, and people who had to leave their homes are now allowed to return. This is a big relief, especially since the fires interrupted Israel’s Independence Day celebrations.
But fire crews say the job isn’t over yet.
“We’re trying to finish before the wind picks up. If not, the fire could start spreading again,” said Tal Volvovitch, a spokesperson for Israel’s fire service.
What Caused the Fires?
No one knows for sure how the fires started, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that 18 people have been arrested for suspected arson one was even caught while setting a fire. On Thursday, police also arrested a 19-year-old from East Jerusalem who posted on social media supporting the fires.
Help Is on the Way
To fight the fires, Israel is getting help from other countries. Planes from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus are expected to arrive soon to drop water on the burning forests.
The Palestinian Authority also offered to help, but it looks like they won’t be joining the effort this time. In 2021, Palestinian firefighters did assist Israel during a similar fire.
No Fires Until May 7
To stop more fires from starting, the fire service has banned lighting fires in open areas until May 7. But don’t worry barbecues are still allowed in special picnic spots. Every year, many families celebrate Independence Day with fun and food in parks and on beaches.
The wildfires have already burned trees and land near Jerusalem, leaving behind blackened fields and smoke-filled skies. But with firefighters, pilots, and volunteers working together, there’s hope the flames will be put out soon.
