432 jostle for APC chairmanship ticket in 57 Lagos councils
Ahead of the July 12 Local Government Election in Lagos State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) says no fewer than 432 aspirants are contesting the primary of the party slated for next Saturday.
The electoral committee of the party released the official list of successful chairmanship aspirants for the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
The screening exercise was conducted at the party’s Secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba between Tuesday, April 29 and Friday, May 3.
A total of 470 aspirants were screened by the committee while 432 were cleared to contest in the party’s primary elections.
It was learnt that the 38 other aspirants were either disqualified or they voluntarily withdrew from the race.
The breakdown of the aspirants revealed that out of the 470, 411 were male while 59 were female.
Checks by our correspondent indicated that Amuwo-Odofin has the highest number of cleared aspirants with 20 vying for the party’s ticket followed by Shomolu which had 18 aspirants cleared.
Other local governments with large number of aspirants are Apapa-Iganmu (16); Bariga LCDA (15); Ikorodu Central Local Government (15); Yaba (14); Agboyi-Ketu LCDA (13); Ajeromi-Ifelodun (13); Badagry Central (13); Ikeja (12); Ojokoro (12); Lagos Mainland (11), among others.
However, Iba, Ijede, Oto-Awori and Lekki and Surulere had one aspirant each cleared to contest unopposed.
In Agege Local Government, AbdulGaniyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the House of Assembly did not show up for the screening as seven aspirants were cleared to contest.
The party in its guidelines released earlier disclosed that indirect primaries would be conducted where executive members across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) would vote on May 10.
It was however gathered that the election would hold where consensus option failed in any of the local governments.
According to the party, disqualified aspirants have an opportunity to file an appeal between Sunday, May 4 and Monday, May 5. Those who wish to contest the outcome of the primaries can submit petitions to the Appeal Committee between May 12 and 13.
