Lagos Assembly Awaits Obasa’s Return, Plans Fraud Probe
The Lagos State House of Assembly is preparing to address allegations of financial misconduct against its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, upon his return to the Assembly. This was disclosed by the House spokesperson, Olukayode Ogundipe, during an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Monday at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja.
Ogundipe emphasized that while preliminary steps have been taken, the Assembly will finalize its approach when Obasa is physically present. “There are other allegations about different amounts of money spent by him. Once he is seated with us, actions will be taken,” Ogundipe said.
The spokesperson hinted that the Assembly might consider forming a committee to investigate the allegations or potentially involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the probe. “Those formalities as per procedures will be followed to the letter. Expect the House to react when the time comes,” he added.
Obama’s Removal and Reactions
Mudashiru Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, by a majority vote of the Assembly, following allegations of corruption and financial misappropriation. He was replaced by the former Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. However, Obasa has publicly dismissed the allegations, claiming his removal was unconstitutional.
Speaking at the Speaker’s Lodge on Saturday, Obasa challenged the accusations, stating, “If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it. Let us see it.” He further insisted that he remained the legitimate Speaker until proper procedures were followed.
In response, Ogundipe defended the House’s decision, maintaining that Obasa’s removal adhered to constitutional processes. “The former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, is still one of us. The process of his removal was constitutional. The procedure was duly followed, and the members collectively decided to change leadership,” Ogundipe said.
Heightened Security and Suspended Plenary
The Assembly complex witnessed heightened security on Monday, with personnel from various security agencies screening individuals attempting to gain entry. Journalists were lined up at the second gate, with access strictly limited to those with proper identification.
This increased security followed Obasa’s public statements challenging his removal. On Saturday, he declared that he remained Speaker until the lawmakers adhered to “the right process.”
Despite plans for a plenary session on Monday, the Assembly postponed its proceedings. According to Ogundipe, the rescheduling was to ensure members had adequate time to settle into their roles and to demonstrate the House’s stability.
Meanwhile, Mojisola Meranda officially assumed office as Speaker on Monday morning, accompanied by lawmakers who expressed their support. Ogundipe reiterated that the Assembly remains calm and functional despite external “noise” surrounding the leadership change.
What Lies Ahead?
The Lagos State House of Assembly is at a critical juncture, with its leadership transition and the looming probe into Obasa’s tenure drawing public attention. As Ogundipe stated, the next steps, including a potential investigation into allegations of financial misconduct, will depend on Obasa’s cooperation and return to the Assembly.
For now, all eyes remain on the Assembly as it navigates this leadership controversy while promising accountability and adherence to constitutional processes.
