Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma has announced the indefinite suspension of all academic activities, effective immediately. The decision came after an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate in response to ongoing student protests.
The university’s Acting Registrar, Ambrose E. Odiase, issued a memo confirming the suspension. The move was deemed necessary to prevent a complete breakdown of law and order and to ensure the safety of lives and property in the university community.
As part of the suspension, all students residing in Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma on-campus hostels were instructed to vacate the Halls of Residence within the next twenty-four (24) hours, with a deadline set for 3:00 pm on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
The student protests, which had been ongoing for about three days, were in response to an alleged increase in school fees for returning students, which disrupted academic activities and a scheduled commendation service for the late Professor of Economics, Prof. Moses Isunu Aliemen. In response to the protests, the Student Union Executive was dissolved.
The university management had previously stated that there had been no increase in tuition fees for returning students. Additionally, the 40th Matriculation Ceremony, originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 5, 2023, has also been indefinitely postponed.
Earlier, the university management had disbanded the students’ union for staging protests against tuition fee hikes and alleged extortion of students by the authorities. The dissolution of the Student Union was based on allegations that the protests breached certain provisions of the university’s rules and regulations, causing disruptions to academic and administrative activities and creating security concerns.
The university emphasized the importance of adhering to established procedures for protests, as outlined in the Student Information Handbook, and assured students that all issues in contention would be resolved through dialogue and other relevant mechanisms. For more update visit thedailycourierng
