APC Accuses PDP of Exploiting Stampede Tragedies for Political Gains
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for allegedly politicizing the recent tragic stampedes during palliative distribution in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, which resulted in multiple fatalities.
In a statement by APC spokesperson Felix Morka, the ruling party described the PDP’s reaction as “callous” and insensitive to the national grief caused by the incidents. According to Morka, instead of showing compassion or proposing solutions, the PDP resorted to “political chicanery” by leveraging the tragedies to criticize the APC-led administration.
The APC further drew attention to what it termed the PDP’s poor track record in governance, citing the 2014 Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise under the PDP government. That event, marred by chaos and inadequate planning, resulted in a stampede at the Abuja Stadium, claiming several lives and injuring many desperate job seekers.
Morka argued that the PDP’s accusations serve only to highlight its past failures, labeling the party’s tenure as characterized by “maladministration and utter incompetence.” He urged Nigerians to remember the missteps of the PDP era while evaluating its current criticisms.
The APC’s response underscores the deeply entrenched political rivalry between the two major parties, even in moments of national tragedy. Critics might argue that both parties should prioritize constructive dialogue and solutions to prevent similar disasters rather than engaging in blame games over past and present failures.
