CNPP Calls for Akpabio to Step Down Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called for Senate President Godswill Akpabio to temporarily step down to allow an independent investigation into serious allegations of sexual harassment raised by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.
In a statement issued on March 3, 2025, the CNPP emphasized that public officeholders must uphold the highest ethical standards. The coalition expressed concern that the allegations could undermine public trust in Nigeria’s legislative body and called for a transparent inquiry into the claims made by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has accused Akpabio of making multiple sexual advances toward her, including in the presence of her husband. She further claimed that after rejecting these advances, Akpabio victimized her within the Senate.
While the CNPP does not presuppose Akpabio’s guilt, it insists that stepping down temporarily would help maintain the integrity of the investigative process and avoid any perception of conflict of interest. The CNPP also urged the Senate Ethics and Privileges Committee to collaborate with external bodies, such as civil society organizations and legal experts, to ensure an unbiased and transparent investigation.
“The gravity of these allegations threatens not only the moral authority of the Senate but also public confidence in Nigeria’s legislative institution,” the CNPP statement read. “We call on the Senate to allow for a credible, impartial inquiry.”
The CNPP also expressed concern for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s safety during the investigation, urging the Nigerian Police, National Human Rights Commission, and gender-rights advocates to provide adequate protection to the accuser. The group stressed that transparency in the process is crucial to ensuring that justice is served.
The call for Akpabio’s recusal highlights the CNPP’s broader message of accountability in public office, particularly in cases of sexual harassment, and its commitment to promoting gender equality and ethical governance. The coalition warned that any delay or politicization of the inquiry would further erode public trust in the Senate’s ability to self-regulate.
As the investigation progresses, the CNPP is calling for the media and civil society to closely monitor the case, ensuring that all actions are taken with the utmost transparency.
