A major construction company in Nigeria, Gorrion Engineering Ltd, has come out to deny allegations that recently completed road projects in Akwa Ibom state were poorly executed and have experienced severe flooding issues.
In a strongly worded statement, the company’s General Manager, Engr. Yusuf Abdula, refuted claims circulating on social media that the Ikot Ebak Stadium/Ikot Esse Road project was abandoned and has been rendered impassable due to flooding after commissioning.
Abdula insisted that the road was duly completed according to specifications and blamed the flooding problems on the refusal of community landowners to provide space for the construction of drainage culverts to divert excess water flow.
Key Points from Gorrion Engineering’s Statement:
- Categorically denied abandoning the road project or delivering substandard work
- Claimed the roads were properly completed and commissioned
- Accused “compromised social media urchins” of spreading misinformation about flooding
- Said landowners refused to provide land for culverts despite contractors’ willingness to compensate
- Stated their workers are still on site trying to address the flooding issue
- Maintained the company’s reputation for excellent project delivery across Nigeria
The firm appeared to suggest that if the local communities had cooperated by allowing drainage infrastructure, the post-completion flooding could have been avoided or minimized.
Whether the company’s claims have merit or this is a case of deflecting blame remains to be seen. But Gorrion Engineering has forcefully pushed back on the allegations of shoddy work on the Akwa Ibom road projects.
