EFCC Arrests 30 Suspected Internet Fraudsters, Seizes Luxury Vehicles in Asaba
ASABA – In a decisive crackdown on cybercrime, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 30 suspected internet fraudsters in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
The arrests were carried out on Friday, March 14, 2025, by officers from the Benin Zonal Directorate of the anti-graft agency. According to a statement released by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the operation was based on credible intelligence regarding the suspects’ alleged involvement in internet fraud.
During the raid, law enforcement officials seized five luxury vehicles and an undisclosed number of mobile phones, which are believed to have been used in fraudulent activities.
“The suspects were arrested based on credible intelligence on their alleged involvement in internet-related fraud. Items recovered from them at the point of arrest include five exotic cars and phones,” Oyewale stated.
He further emphasized that investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as the necessary legal processes were completed.
A Widening Crackdown on Cybercrime
The latest arrests in Asaba mark yet another major enforcement action by the EFCC in its relentless fight against cybercrime across Nigeria. This follows a pattern of increasing crackdowns, with similar operations leading to multiple convictions in recent months.
Just last month, 32 internet fraudsters were convicted in Ibadan, while 21 others were jailed in Benin City for various cyber-related offenses. In a separate case in Abuja, two individuals were also sentenced for their roles in fraudulent schemes.
Rising Concerns Over Cybercrime
Nigeria has faced mounting challenges in tackling cybercrime, which has tarnished the country’s global reputation and led to significant financial losses for victims, both locally and internationally. Law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, have ramped up operations against internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys.”
The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to combating financial crimes and has urged citizens to report suspicious online activities to authorities.
Legal Implications for the Suspects
While the identities of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed, they are expected to be prosecuted under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws. If found guilty, they could face lengthy prison sentences, asset forfeiture, and other legal penalties.
The EFCC has assured the public that it will continue its crackdown on internet fraud as part of its broader mission to rid Nigeria of financial crimes and restore public trust in the country’s economic system.
