The political feud between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, has taken a new turn, with a Ex-Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zacchaeus Adangor, accusing Fubara of lacking the will to reconcile with Wike.
In a scathing assessment during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program, Ex-Attorney General Adangor, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), dismissed the notion that Fubara is a peacemaker, stating, “He (Fubara) is not the person people think he is, he is not a peacemaker.”
Ex-Attorney General Adangor, who resigned from Fubara’s cabinet in April, revealed that his ordeal with the governor began on December 18, 2023, shortly after the Presidential Peace Pact in Abuja. He claimed that Fubara did not consult him before redeploying him from the Ministry of Justice to the Ministry of Special Duties, a move he described as a consequence of his stance on upholding the rule of law.
The former Attorney General refuted Fubara’s claims that he sabotaged the administration while in office, asserting that his redeployment and subsequent resignation were due to his insistence on conducting matters in accordance with the law.
Adangor dismissed suggestions of disloyalty, stating, “Politically, I am loyal to Wike, there is no doubt about that. I wouldn’t know whether he (Fubara) was angered by that or not. But as far as I remember, he was angry that I insisted on conducting a matter in accordance with the understanding of the law.”
He further revealed that Fubara allegedly asked him to institute suits challenging the validity of the Presidential Peace Pact, an action he refused to take, leading to his resignation.
Adangor cited two instances that he believes demonstrate Fubara’s lack of commitment to reconciliation with Wike. Firstly, he alleged that Fubara directed the management of Rivers State University, where Adangor is employed, not to allow him to return after his resignation. Secondly, he claimed that Fubara refused to sign the warrant of establishment for a customary court in Adangor’s local community as a form of punishment.
These revelations from a former top official in Fubara’s administration cast doubt on the governor’s purported efforts to resolve the longstanding feud with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Adangor’s accusations paint a picture of a leader unwilling to take steps towards reconciliation and instead resorting to retaliatory measures against those perceived as loyal to Wike.
As the political drama in Rivers State continues to unfold, Adangor’s statements have added fuel to the fire, further highlighting the deep divisions and lack of trust between the two camps. The path towards reconciliation appears to be fraught with obstacles, and it remains to be seen whether Fubara and Wike can find common ground and restore stability to the state’s political landscape.
