Fayemi Dismisses Defection Rumors, Reaffirms Commitment to APC
Amid swirling rumors of his alleged defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has come forward to dismiss the claims as baseless.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, Fayemi reaffirmed his allegiance to the ruling party, declaring that he remains a “card-carrying foundation member” of the APC.

“My attention has been drawn to a story circulating on several online platforms regarding my defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC). As I have had cause to state in the past, I am a card-carrying foundation member of the APC, and this position has not changed,” Fayemi wrote.
While maintaining his stance within the APC, Fayemi acknowledged ongoing internal struggles within the party. He emphasized his continued advocacy for greater internal democracy and inclusion but expressed hope that the party could still correct its course.
“While I have been at the vanguard of demand for greater internal democracy and inclusion in the ruling party, I believe it is still not late for our party to change course and move towards greater inclusion and internal democracy,” he added.
Fayemi’s clarification comes at a time when the APC is facing increasing internal divisions, exacerbated by the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). El-Rufai, in his defection statement, accused the APC leadership of abandoning its founding progressive ideals, a sentiment that has fueled growing concerns about the party’s future.
Despite Fayemi’s reaffirmation of loyalty, political analysts speculate that his recent remarks signal deeper frustrations with the APC’s trajectory. The former governor’s call for reforms within the party suggests that dissatisfaction continues to simmer among its ranks, raising questions about whether more high-profile figures may follow El-Rufai’s exit.
As the APC grapples with these internal challenges, all eyes remain on its leadership to address the growing concerns of discontent within its fold. Whether Fayemi’s call for change will be heeded or if further fractures will emerge remains to be seen.
