FCCPC Summons Air Peace Over Alleged Flight Cancellations and Unrefunded Tickets
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has officially summoned Air Peace Limited to appear before the Commission following mounting consumer complaints regarding the airline’s alleged failure to refund ticket fares after cancelling flights.
In a press statement issued Monday in Abuja, Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, disclosed that the airline’s actions if confirmed could constitute a serious breach of consumer protection laws under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
According to the Commission, the conduct allegedly violates Sections 130(1)(a), 130(1)(b), and 130(2)(b) of the Act, which guarantee the right to prompt refunds when services paid for in advance are not rendered. The Act underscores the need for fair treatment of consumers and protects against exploitative or unjust business practices.
A formal summons dated June 13, 2025, directs the management of Air Peace to appear before the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday, June 23, 2025. The airline is also required to present extensive documentation, including:
A log of consumer complaints related to refunds within the past 12 months
A complete record of processed refunds during the same period
A list of all cancelled flights across all routes in the last year
Evidence of steps taken to mitigate passenger inconvenience
FCCPC warned that under Section 33(3) of the FCCPA, failure to comply with the summons could lead to serious penalties, including substantial fines and imprisonment.
This latest development follows earlier scrutiny by the Commission into Air Peace’s pricing practices. In December 2024, the FCCPC launched an investigation into claims of inflated ticket prices particularly on advance bookings on select domestic routes. In response, Air Peace filed a lawsuit to halt the regulatory probe.
Despite the legal pushback, the FCCPC insists it will not relent in its statutory responsibility to protect Nigerian consumers.
“The FCCPC remains unwavering in its mission to enforce the FCCPA and ensure that no service provider, including airlines, operates above the law. Nigerian consumers deserve transparency, fairness, and accountability,” said Ijagwu.
Air Peace is yet to issue a formal statement regarding the summons or the allegations.
