The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that measures are being taken to address the rising food prices by releasing food items from the National Food Reserves.
This assurance was given by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following a meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention, convened at the instance of President Bola Tinubu.
The meeting, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, aimed to tackle the issue of food scarcity and high prices affecting many Nigerians.
Idris stated that the government plans to engage major millers and commodity traders to make food items readily available to the public. He emphasized the government’s commitment to intervening to alleviate the suffering caused by food shortages.
“We just concluded a meeting to address the issue of food shortage in Nigeria,” Idris said. “The President has directed that the government needs to step in to stem this tide. Government will not stand by idly while Nigerians suffer due to the unavailability of food items.”
He also noted that some individuals were taking advantage of the situation, exploiting the high cost of food items. However, Idris assured that there is still food available in the country and measures are being taken to ensure its accessibility to all Nigerians.
The Minister highlighted the involvement of key stakeholders in the discussions, including the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Minister of Finance. He emphasized that the government is addressing the issue comprehensively and will continue to do so until a solution is reached.
Idris concluded by urging understanding from the public and promising that concrete actions would be taken to provide relief to Nigerians affected by the food crisis.
To curb the rising food prices “Discussions will continue, and soon, a solution will be in sight. The government is committed to providing relief to Nigerians and will take significant steps to ensure that they have access to food.”
