Godwin Emefiele in Kuje the Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Emefiele, has been remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. This order follows a six-count charge brought against Emefiele by the Nigerian government, alleging N1.6 billion procurement fraud.

The charges, reduced from an original 20 counts for N6.5 billion, focus on the alleged illegal procurement of 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020 worth N1.2 billion. Emefiele is accused of awarding a contract for the supply of 37 Toyota Hilux Vehicles valued at N854 million.

The amended charge sheet outlines various instances where Emefiele, in his capacity as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is alleged to have conferred corrupt advantages on Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The charges specify the awarding of contracts to April1616 Investment Ltd., a company in which Yaro is a director.

The counts include allegations of awarding contracts for the supply of vehicles, including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Avalon, and Toyota Landcruiser V8, with corresponding values mentioned in the charges.

During the court proceedings, Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges after the six-count indictment was read to him. The trial judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, adjourned the case to November 22 for a ruling on Emefiele’s bail application and scheduled the trial to commence on November 28.
