Liberian President George Weah: Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has commended Liberian President George Weah for his display of statesmanship in accepting defeat in the recently concluded presidential election. The Liberian electoral commission reported that opposition leader Joseph Boakai secured victory with 50.89% of the vote, while Weah garnered 49.11%, based on the tally from more than 99% of polling stations.

In a series of tweets on Saturday titled ‘Liberia wins, Democracy gains,’ Jonathan expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the democratic process in Liberia. He specifically praised Weah for accepting defeat and congratulating his opponent even before the official declaration of the final result by the National Election Commission of Liberia.

Jonathan, who led the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) Mediation Mission to both the October 10, 2023, general elections and the November 14, 2023, presidential run-off poll in Liberia, highlighted Weah’s exemplary statesmanship and commitment to the peace and progress of his country. The former Nigerian leader emphasized that Weah’s actions were a positive reflection on democracy and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the West African regional bloc.

Liberian President George Weah prepares for a transition of power, with Boakai set to officially assume the presidency in January 2024, Jonathan urged the president-elect to be magnanimous in victory. Boakai, who served as vice-president for 12 years under former President Ellen Sirleaf, is expected to continue efforts to unite and advance the country.

The peaceful electoral process and Weah’s graceful concession contribute to a positive narrative for democracy in the West African region. Jonathan expressed delight that, at the end of the exercise, Liberia emerged as the winner, democracy gained ground, and ECOWAS was better for it. The former footballer-turned-president, Weah, made history in 2018 by becoming Liberia’s first African former professional footballer to lead the country.

Overall, the Liberian elections underscore the importance of democratic values and the peaceful transfer of power in the region. Jonathan’s role as a mediator in the electoral process further solidifies the commitment of African leaders to upholding democratic principles and fostering regional stability.
