Fubara Ordered Bombing of Rivers Assembly, Ex-HoS Alleges; Wife Disputes Claim
The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened as the former Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, alleged that the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, orchestrated the 2023 bombing of the state House of Assembly complex. However, his wife, Florence Nwaeke, has raised alarm, claiming that her husband may have been coerced into making the statement.
Explosive Allegation Against Fubara
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Dr. Nwaeke stated that Governor Fubara ordered the attack in a desperate move to prevent his impeachment by lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“I was at the government house when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for that operation, though I do not know the amount inside,” Nwaeke alleged, insinuating that financial incentives were involved in the act of destruction.
He further asserted that there were subsequent plans to demolish the residential quarters of the state lawmakers but that the intervention of Rivers youths, elders, and National Assembly members prevented another act of vandalism.
“I was shocked and asked myself how a man who claims to lead his people could be destroying state assets and wasting public funds on an unnecessary ego fight,” Nwaeke stated.
Wife Raises Alarm: ‘That’s Not My Husband’
In a dramatic twist, Florence Nwaeke, wife of the former HoS, publicly rejected her husband’s statements, insisting that the man in the interview was not acting of his own volition. She claimed she had lost contact with him since he traveled to Abuja and only became aware of the interview through social media.
“When he got to Abuja, he called to say he had landed. I thanked God. But the next thing I saw was people calling me, saying he granted an interview. I was in shock,” she said in an emotional interview with Channels TV.
She described the situation as alarming, questioning whether her husband had been coerced or kidnapped.
“I sent him messages: ‘Are you under duress? Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not talking to me?’ But he has not responded. His numbers are not going through. Nigerians, help me!” she pleaded.
Claims of Resignation Under Duress
Florence further alleged that her husband resigned from office due to immense pressure to sign documents that would implicate Governor Fubara.
“He said he would rather resign than be forced into a situation that could ruin his integrity. So, he wrote his resignation letter,” she explained, suggesting that his departure from office was not voluntary but a result of political intimidation.
Fubara Yet to Respond
As the controversy rages, Governor Fubara has yet to respond to the allegations. His administration remains embroiled in a power struggle with political heavyweights, particularly those aligned with Nyesom Wike, as Rivers State continues to experience political instability.
The conflicting statements from Dr. Nwaeke and his wife raise serious concerns about the credibility of the allegations and whether external forces are influencing the narrative.
With the political climate in Rivers State becoming increasingly volatile, the public awaits further developments on what could become one of the most dramatic political scandals in recent state history.
This incident underscores the deepening crisis within the Rivers State government, as political factions struggle for dominance. Whether Dr. Nwaeke’s claims hold water or are a result of coercion remains uncertain. As the situation unfolds, it is imperative for security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
