FUOYE Governing Council Clears Vice Chancellor of Misconduct Allegations

The leadership board of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has officially cleared the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, of allegations of inappropriate behavior brought against him by a senior faculty member.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the university’s Registrar and Council Secretary, Mr. Mufutau Ibrahim, on Wednesday in Oye-Ekiti.

The Council has instructed the complainant, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, to submit a formal apology to the board within seven days.

In February, a special panel was set up by the Council to probe the accusations. The investigation was prompted by a petition from the university’s local chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), which had persistently called for an inquiry into the matter.

To ensure impartiality, the Vice Chancellor recused himself from the Council meeting where the findings were reviewed.

During deliberations, the council examined audio recordings presented as evidence. These recordings were translated and thoroughly analyzed. Members concluded there was no evidence of sexual harassment, aligning with an earlier report by the Nigerian Police, where the complainant stated she was not subjected to any sexual misconduct.

The council determined that the recordings were used as leverage in an attempt to pressure the Vice Chancellor into confirming Adebayo’s appointment as substantive Director of Works and Services—an appointment outside his jurisdiction.

“The council found the claims baseless and directed that Adebayo receive a formal warning for attempting to tarnish the reputation of the institution. She is also expected to provide a written apology within a week,” the statement said.

The Council further expressed concern about how the university administration managed the matter, pointing out that Adebayo was given favorable treatment when her promotion was retroactively dated to 2015 during the year 2024.

The governing body cautioned the management against such practices and instructed that the backdated promotion be reassessed.

It was also disclosed that the roles of Director of Physical Planning and Director of Works and Services will be publicly advertised to ensure a transparent recruitment process.
