Gunmen Attack Youths in Rivers State Amid Political Tensions
Political instability in Rivers State escalated on Wednesday as gunmen opened fire on a gathering of youths in Elele, Ikwerre Local Government Area. The youths, reportedly supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, had assembled at a roundabout in Elele when the attack occurred, leaving at least four people injured.
Background of the Incident
The attack took place amidst a growing political crisis following a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the Martin Amaewhule-led assembly to Governor Fubara, demanding that he re-present the 2025 budget for approval. With the deadline expiring on March 5, tensions in the oil-rich state have been at an all-time high.
Causes of the Incident
Political Rivalry and Power Struggle: The conflict between Governor Fubara and the Martin Amaewhule-led assembly has intensified in recent weeks, with both factions vying for political dominance. The gathering in Elele was perceived as a show of support for the governor, possibly provoking opposition elements to respond with violence.
Role of Vigilante Groups in Political Conflicts: Eyewitness reports suggest that the attack was carried out by a local vigilante commander, popularly known as ‘Fucking Naira,’ who allegedly supports an opposing political faction. This incident underscores the growing influence of vigilante groups in political disputes and their potential use as tools for intimidation.
Breakdown of Law and Order: The use of armed groups in political disputes indicates a failure of security mechanisms to prevent violence. The presence of vigilante groups operating outside legal boundaries suggests that the state’s security framework is either compromised or unable to control politically motivated violence.
Escalating Political Tensions: The ultimatum given to Governor Fubara added pressure to an already volatile situation. The failure to resolve political disagreements through dialogue has resulted in confrontations spilling onto the streets, further endangering public safety.
Police Response
Confirming the incident, Rivers State police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that only four people sustained gunshot wounds. She added that the attack occurred as police officers attempted to disperse an unlawful assembly at the Elele Roundabout.
“While officers were addressing the crowd, an unidentified assailant hiding nearby opened fire, resulting in multiple injuries,” she stated.
Police managed to apprehend one suspect and recovered a single-barrel gun. The suspect is set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for other perpetrators, some of whom have been identified as members of the Obio/Akpor Security Planning and Advisory Committee, a local vigilante group
The incident in Elele highlights the increasing volatility of political conflicts in Rivers State and the dangerous involvement of armed vigilante groups. Unless immediate measures are taken to address these tensions, including a commitment to non-violent political engagement and stronger law enforcement oversight, similar incidents may continue to threaten public peace and stability.
