The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has voiced its apprehension regarding the escalating insecurity in the lead-up to the governorship elections scheduled for November 11 in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states.
In a statement released by Sam Olumekun, the Commission’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission appealed to political parties and their candidates to refrain from actions and statements that could exacerbate the already tense situation.
Olumekun stated, “The commission is concerned about the spate of insecurity and violence, including clashes among supporters of political parties and candidates in the forthcoming elections.”
Furthermore, the commission urged all political parties and candidates to exercise restraint in their rhetoric and actions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a peaceful political environment. INEC pledged to closely monitor the situation and maintain its collaboration with security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the peaceful conduct of elections in the three states.
