Israel’s relentless assault on Gaza is evolving, with shifting objectives that leave both allies and adversaries questioning its endgame. What began as a military campaign to pressure Hamas into releasing Israeli hostages has now expanded into broader territorial maneuvers and long-term strategic ambitions.
Escalating Operations and New Objectives
Israeli forces have launched fresh evacuation orders across eastern Gaza City, warning residents to flee ahead of intensified operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure and governance, though a year of fierce combat has yet to achieve that aim.
“We have moved up a gear,” Netanyahu declared on Wednesday, touting new territorial gains and deeper incursions into Gaza. Defense Minister Israel Katz hinted at a prolonged military presence in the enclave, suggesting that securing buffer zones was crucial for protecting Israeli troops and border towns.

For the hostages still held since the brutal Hamas-led attack of October 7, 2023, military pressure may be doing more harm than good. Former captives have recounted worsening conditions under Israeli bombardment, living in constant fear of execution by either their captors or an incoming Israeli strike.
“To a large extent, this offensive endangers the lives of the remaining hostages,” Orion warned.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The ongoing offensive has taken a staggering humanitarian toll. Since the ceasefire collapsed on March 18, Israeli ground forces have pushed through key areas, reclaiming the strategic Netzarim Corridor and establishing another east-west divide within Gaza’s territory. The United Nations estimates that over 140,000 people have been displaced in just two weeks.
With commercial goods and humanitarian aid blocked from entering Gaza for over a month, desperation is growing. The World Food Program has run out of flour and fuel, forcing bakeries to shut down and leading to skyrocketing food prices. Gaza’s health officials report a grim death toll—over 50,000 lives lost since the war erupted, while Israeli officials count 1,200 fatalities from the initial Hamas attack.
