The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the release of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME results, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards tertiary education for millions of Nigerian candidates. However, the announcement was accompanied by a concerning revelation – the examination body has withheld the results of 64,624 candidates due to possible infractions.
During a press conference held at JAMB’s headquarters in Abuja, the Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed that out of the 1,989,668 registered candidates, 1,904,189 were present and verified, while 2,899 were present but unverified, and 80,810 were absent. JAMB released the results of 1,842,464 candidates, while the remaining 64,624 are under investigation for various reasons.
Oloyede stated that the withheld results are being scrutinized for reasons ranging from verification issues, procedural investigations, center-based investigations, and alleged examination misconduct. Specifically, 2,896 results are under investigation for verification issues, 4,594 for procedural investigations of candidates, 57,056 for center-based investigations across 18 centers in Edo, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Kwara states, and 78 for alleged examination misconduct.
The JAMB Registrar expressed disappointment over the infractions, stating that only a meager 0.4% of the released results scored above 300, while 24% scored 50% (200/400) and above. He reiterated JAMB’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process, emphasizing that the government has entrusted them with a responsibility that they will not shy away from.
“For us, in the not-too-distant future, we hope to see an examination cycle that would be completely devoid of infractions,” Oloyede said, underscoring JAMB’s determination to continually improve the examination process.
The release of the UTME results is a significant step for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria. However, the high number of withheld results serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by JAMB in ensuring a fair and transparent examination process. As the investigations continue, candidates and stakeholders alike will be eagerly awaiting further updates from JAMB regarding the resolution of these infractions.
