Lagos Assembly Seeks Presidential Intervention in Obasa’s Removal

The Lagos State House of Assembly is considering reaching out to President Bola Tinubu regarding the recent removal of Mudashiru Obasa from his position as Speaker. This development follows extensive deliberations by the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

On January 13, 2025 Obasa was impeached amid allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of power. Subsequently, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was unanimously elected as his successor.

The GAC convened a meeting at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina, Lagos, with key figures in attendance, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, and members of the House leadership. Discussions centered on the legality and political implications of Obasa’s removal.

Chief Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member, emphasized the council’s stance, stating, “The leadership has considered that if he has committed any visible offence, we would have known, and they have not reported him before. What they did is not right politically and constitutionally.” He further advocated for Obasa’s reinstatement, suggesting that he be allowed to voluntarily resign if he chooses.

In response, the lawmakers have resolved to draft a letter to President Tinubu, outlining their grievances and the rationale behind their decision to remove Obasa. This correspondence aims to seek the President’s guidance and possibly his intervention in the matter.

The situation remains fluid, with the GAC awaiting the outcome of the lawmakers’ communication with the President. Chief Tajudeen Olusi, the GAC chairman, noted that an official position would be articulated when deemed appropriate, stating, “At the appropriate time, we shall talk.”

As the political dynamics unfold, stakeholders within Lagos State and the broader political landscape are keenly observing the developments, anticipating a resolution that upholds both legal and party principles.
