“Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”: Wike Urges PDP’s Ighodalo to Move On, Backs Okpebholo’s Victory

In what appears to be a bold break from party lines, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged Asuerime Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, to accept the recent Court of Appeal ruling and let the legal battles come to an end.

Wike, a senior PDP figure known for his blunt political style and maverick moves, made the appeal in a statement released Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

The Court of Appeal had earlier upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo, declaring that the September 21, 2024 election result reflected the will of the people.

“In the collective interest of Edo State,” Wike stated, “Ighodalo should accept the judgment and allow the sleeping dogs to lie.”

While such counsel might appear politically disloyal on the surface, Wike framed his message as a patriotic appeal an invitation to prioritize state development over prolonged courtroom drama.

In a surprising twist, he congratulated Governor Okpebholo, a member of the opposition, and advised him to remain “focused and committed to good governance and provision of democracy dividends to the people.”

Wike’s endorsement went beyond politeness. He openly praised Okpebholo’s performance since taking office, describing his leadership as impressive and promising.

“I have watched him since he assumed office, and I can say that he has been doing well for Edo State and its people,” Wike remarked. “I believe in him, and I am confident that his government will have a sustainable impact.”

A Political Crossroads?

Wike’s remarks have raised eyebrows, especially within PDP circles, as he seems increasingly unafraid to cross the aisle when it comes to applauding political competence. His statement is not just a personal opinion it sends a message: the time has come for Edo to move forward, not backward.

Whether this signals deeper cracks within the PDP or simply Wike’s unique approach to national unity remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Wike continues to shake Nigeria’s political table with his unexpected, sometimes controversial stands.

As Edo State steadies under the affirmed leadership of Governor Okpebholo, the question now is will the PDP’s Ighodalo heed the call to peace? Or will legal embers continue to smolder beneath the surface?
