A lucky Maryland lottery player is ringing in 2023 with some extra spending money after hitting a $1 million prize in the Powerball drawing on New Year’s Day.

The Powerball winning ticket was sold at Green Meadows Exxon, a local gas station in Hyattsville. The winner matched all five white ball numbers—12, 21, 42, 44, and 49—but just missed the Powerball of 1. Still, that was good enough to secure a $1 million windfall.

Store owner Mark Kim was ecstatic when he got the call that his shop had sold the precious ticket. “We’re a small business, but we sell hundreds of lottery tickets every week,” he said. “It’s great that one of our customers started their year off with a big win.”

The $1 million prize was one of three second-tier winners nationwide from the January 1 drawing, which featured a monstrous jackpot of $842 million. An even luckier player in Michigan took home the grand prize.

But for the mystery winner in Hyattsville, New Year’s Day will still be one to remember. As they enjoy their million-dollar payday, the rest of us can only look on in envy and scan our tickets again, just in case!

Local residents should check their numbers because the winner has 182 days to claim their prize. And the folks at Green Meadows Exxon will happily verify if you’re Prince George’s County’s newest millionaire
