Mamora Advises Lagos Assembly Speaker, Meranda: Avoid Leadership Pitfalls
In a candid piece of advice to the newly sworn-in Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, Olorunnimbe Mamora, former Speaker and ex-Minister, has urged her to tread carefully and avoid the “banana peels” that could hinder her leadership success. This counsel follows the controversial removal of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, and her subsequent appointment as the first female Speaker of the Assembly.
Mamora, who served as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2003, expressed his confidence in Meranda’s potential but cautioned her to learn from the missteps of her predecessor. In a brief yet pointed interview, Mamora highlighted the need for Meranda to prioritize transparency, fairness, and financial accountability to avoid the pitfalls of high-handedness, intimidation, and mismanagement—allegations that ultimately led to Obasa’s ousting.
Obasa’s removal on January 13, 2025, came after a decisive vote by 35 out of the 40 members of the House. He was replaced by Meranda, his former Deputy, amidst allegations of misconduct, including financial mismanagement and abuse of power. Obasa, in his defense, claimed that his removal violated due process and was unconstitutional, sparking controversy in the state.
Mamora, in his reflection on the state’s current political landscape, noted that Lagos had made history by electing its first female Speaker—a milestone that brings with it significant expectations. While celebrating Meranda’s achievement, he warned her that gender alone would not justify her leadership. She must prove her worth by adhering to the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and respect for her colleagues.
“Now that you have been given the opportunity, you must deliver on the people’s expectations. First and foremost, your colleagues in the House will judge you by how well you provide leadership. You must prove your capability to lead effectively and with integrity,” Mamora advised.
Drawing from his own experience as a former Speaker, Mamora underscored the importance of avoiding the mistakes of past leaders. He likened these pitfalls to “banana peels”—metaphors for situations that can cause a leader to slip if not careful. He encouraged Meranda to take a hard look at the reasons for Obasa’s downfall, particularly the issues of financial mismanagement and authoritarian tendencies. “You should ensure you don’t step into the same traps that led to your predecessor’s removal. Learn from the mistakes that were made under his leadership,” Mamora cautioned.
In addition to avoiding past mistakes, Mamora stressed the importance of regular self-assessments and maintaining an open line of communication with colleagues. “You must perform constant reality checks. Ask your colleagues how you’re doing, even those who may be considered your critics. It’s important to foster relationships and maintain transparency,” he advised. According to Mamora, this ongoing self-reflection will be vital in gaining the trust and respect of fellow lawmakers.
Financial accountability was another key area Mamora emphasized. During his tenure as Speaker, he introduced a fund management committee to ensure that resources were allocated transparently and efficiently. This, he believes, is critical to maintaining credibility and avoiding the allegations of financial mismanagement that plagued Obasa. “Ensure that funds are managed transparently, and always be accountable to your colleagues and to the people of Lagos,” Mamora urged.
He also advised Meranda to master the legislative rules and constitutional provisions governing the Assembly. By being well-versed in these areas, she would be better equipped to assert her authority and ensure that the House operates within the bounds of the law. “Master the rules, be familiar with the constitution, and ensure that no one can undermine your authority on the floor of the House. Confidence in your role will stem from knowledge and respect for the rules,” he said.
Finally, Mamora reminded Meranda that while the position of Speaker is important, it is temporary, and she must approach it with humility and a sense of service. “Never forget that the position is transient. Put God first in all your endeavors and always serve with the fear of God,” Mamora concluded.
As Meranda embarks on her tenure as Lagos State’s first female Speaker, the eyes of the state and the nation will be closely watching her actions.
