Mokwa Flood Relief: Borno, Taraba Donate N350m as Red Cross Steps In with Emergency Aid
In a show of solidarity and swift humanitarian response, the governments of Borno and Taraba States have collectively donated N350 million to aid victims of the devastating flood disaster that recently struck Mokwa, Niger State. The Borno State Government led the charge with a generous N300 million donation, while Taraba contributed N50 million to support ongoing relief efforts.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, known for his proactive and empathetic leadership, personally led a delegation to Minna, where he met with Niger State Governor Umar Bago. During the visit, Zulum emphasized that the donation was meant to bolster Niger State’s emergency response and bring urgent relief to affected families.
“We are here not just to offer help, but to stand with the people of Mokwa in their time of need,” Zulum said. “This tragedy highlights the urgent need for sub-national collaboration to confront the increasing threats of climate change.”
Governor Zulum also urged the Federal Government to establish a more robust national disaster response mechanism, stressing that climate-induced disasters like floods are no longer occasional but becoming disturbingly frequent.
In response, Governor Bago expressed heartfelt gratitude, describing the donation as “timely and deeply appreciated.” He praised Zulum’s leadership qualities—his doggedness, proactive governance, and compassion—adding that these values should be emulated nationwide.
Meanwhile, the Taraba State Government, represented by Senator Manu Haruna, also visited Niger State and handed over a N50 million donation on behalf of the people of Taraba. Senator Haruna conveyed the condolences of the Taraba State Government and expressed deep sympathy for the victims.
“We share in your grief and stand with you in rebuilding lives and communities,” he stated.
Governor Bago, once again, extended thanks for the thoughtful gesture, calling it a reflection of inter-state unity and concern for the common good.
Red Cross Mobilizes Emergency Aid
Beyond financial assistance, the Nigerian Red Cross Society has stepped in with critical non-food items to ease the burden on displaced families. According to a statement from the Red Cross Head of Communications, Chima Nwankwo, the organization has reached out to 100 of the most affected families.
Each household received essential relief materials including plastic buckets, jerry cans for clean water storage, mobile taps for handwashing, Aquatabs (water purification tablets), sleeping mats, blankets, camp beds, and comprehensive shelter kits.
“These supplies are crucial in preventing disease outbreaks and ensuring basic comfort as families try to recover from the tragedy,” Nwankwo explained. He assured the public that the Red Cross would continue to coordinate with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to monitor the situation and roll out additional relief.
A National Wake-Up Call
The Mokwa flood is more than a local disaster it’s a national wake-up call. Lives have been upended, homes destroyed, and livelihoods lost. Yet amidst the pain, the collective response from Borno, Taraba, and humanitarian agencies like the Red Cross demonstrates that unity and empathy still define our national spirit.
As advocacy intensifies to keep residents away from flood-prone coastlines, and calls grow louder for climate resilience and infrastructure upgrades, one thing remains clear: it’s not just about responding to disasters but about preparing for the ones yet to come.
