In an unexpected political twist, Mudashiru Obasa has reclaimed his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just 49 days after being ousted by an overwhelming majority of his colleagues. His reinstatement on Monday, March 3, marks a stunning reversal in what was considered one of the most contentious leadership battles in the state’s recent history.
A Contentious Removal and Return
Obasa’s initial removal on January 13 was spearheaded by 36 lawmakers who accused him of high-handedness, financial misappropriation, and poor leadership. The lawmakers, who subsequently elected Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, insisted that the decision was constitutional, citing the two-thirds majority required for such an action.
Obasa, however, challenged the legality of his removal, arguing that it was carried out while he was abroad and during the assembly’s recess. His return suggests a significant shift in political alliances within the Lagos Assembly and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Backroom Negotiations and Political Maneuvering
Before Monday’s plenary session, Obasa, Meranda, and other lawmakers reportedly held closed-door discussions. Key political figures, including the Lagos State Attorney General, Lawal Pedro, and APC leaders, were also present at the meeting. This behind-the-scenes engagement appears to have played a crucial role in orchestrating Obasa’s comeback.
Following these negotiations, Noheem Adams, a lawmaker representing Eti-Osa I, formally nominated Obasa for the speakership, a move that faced no opposition. Meranda, Lagos’ first female Speaker, then announced her resignation, effectively ending her brief tenure, which lasted just under two months.
Meranda’s Resignation and Reinstatement as Deputy Speaker
Meranda’s departure was accompanied by a speech in which she emphasized her commitment to the stability of the House, stating that she had chosen to step down to prevent further legislative turmoil and embarrassment.
“I did not arrive at this decision lightly,” she said. “With your unflinching support, I made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. However, in deference to our esteemed political leaders, I have agreed to make this personal sacrifice.”
Following her resignation, Rauf Olawale, a lawmaker representing Amuwo Odofin Constituency 2, moved a motion nominating Meranda as deputy speaker. The motion was seconded by Abiodun Orekoya and subsequently approved, reinstating her to her former role.
A Fractured Assembly and Party Implications
Obasa’s return to power does not erase the deep divisions within the Lagos Assembly and the APC. His removal had triggered intense factionalism, with the party’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC) also witnessing internal conflicts over the leadership struggle. While his reinstatement may appear to signal party unity, it is also an indication of the political weight he still carries within the APC.
Moreover, Obasa had filed a lawsuit challenging his removal, which was scheduled for a hearing on March 7 before Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja. Given his reinstatement, it is likely that the case will be withdrawn.

Obasa’s return raises critical questions about governance and stability in the Lagos Assembly. His past tenure was marred by allegations of financial misconduct, and his ability to reunite the fractured House remains uncertain.
