Musk Advocates for ‘Zero Tariff Situation’ Between U.S. and Europe, Criticizes Trump Trade Adviser
WASHINGTON – Elon Musk has called for a “zero tariff situation” between the U.S. and Europe, opposing the new tariff policies proposed by President Donald Trump. Musk’s remarks came during a Saturday meeting with Italian conservative politicians, including Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy’s right-wing League Party.
Musk emphasized his support for creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America. “At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation,” Musk said.
Trump’s recent push to impose massive tariffs on all U.S. trading partners, including European nations, has raised concerns in the stock market. While tariffs were a key component of Trump’s economic strategy during his 2024 campaign, the president argues that they provide leverage for future trade negotiations.
“The tariffs give us great power to negotiate. Always have,” Trump stated last week, although he did not clarify what the final tariff rates might look like.
Musk also took to his social media platform, X, to criticize Peter Navarro, one of Trump’s top trade advisers. Navarro has been a vocal defender of the president’s tariff policies, appearing on television to justify the controversial plan after a significant stock market drop.
In an exchange on X, Musk dismissed Navarro’s credentials, sarcastically commenting, “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing.” Musk continued his criticism by calling Navarro, who is known for his economic expertise, “ain’t built” anything, using an expletive in his response.
The debate over tariffs continues to be a hot topic in U.S. politics, with many questioning the potential economic consequences as the new measures take shape.
