Unauthorized mining activities: The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gombe State has apprehended three individuals suspected of engaging in unauthorized mining activities. The arrests took place in the Gamawa community, Akko Local Government Area, where the suspects were found operating without the necessary clearance from the Federal Government.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammad Muazu, emphasized the significant environmental and security risks associated with illegal mining, including soil erosion, deforestation, and water pollution. Muazu revealed that the suspects initially claimed to possess a valid license, but upon investigation, it was uncovered that they were mining coal instead of the approved Laterite sand.

In response to the discovery, the NSCDC reported the incident to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development and the Gombe State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Consequently, the command ordered the immediate suspension of all activities at the mining site until proper authorization is obtained from the relevant authorities.

Sanusi Pindiga, the Gombe State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, echoed the need for stringent measures to regulate mining operations across the state. He stressed the importance of miners adhering to the required protocols and obtaining clearance from the ministry before commencing any mining activities.

Pindiga urged all miners to comply with the directive and warned against unauthorized mining activities emphasizing that non-compliance could lead to severe consequences. He further called for cooperation between miners and the ministry to ensure responsible and sustainable mining practices, safeguarding the well-being of the local communities and the environment.
