In an exclusive development, disenchanted Nigerian soldiers have submitted a petition to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, urgently seeking the redeployment of the Chief of Personnel Management (CPM), Maj. Gen. Y. Yahaya, and Infantry Corp Commander (ICC), Maj. Gen. O.O. Oluyede. The Nigerian soldiers, who spoke to SaharaReporters on Tuesday while requesting anonymity, accused these officers of corruption and negligence in their duties, which they argue has resulted in a significant number of military personnel retiring or deserting.
These soldiers pointed out a violation of the Armed Forces Act governing Nigerian military operations, stating that according to the act, military personnel should not remain stationed in one location for more than four years. However, many soldiers have allegedly been confined to a single barracks for eight or even ten years.
The soldiers outlined their grievances in a petition addressed to the Chief of Army Staff, a copy of which was obtained by SaharaReporters. In the petition, they claimed that the officers had failed to release Infantry postings throughout the year. According to military policy, Infantry postings should be issued quarterly, corresponding to each quarter of the year. Despite being in the third quarter, no such postings have been released so far.
The petition read, “Maj. Gen. Y. Yahaya, Chief of Personnel Management (CPM), and Maj. Gen. O.O. Oluyede, Infantry Corp Commander (ICC), have not released Infantry postings throughout this year. Infantry postings are supposed to be released quarterly after every three months – first quarter posting, second quarter posting, third quarter posting, and fourth quarter posting, but up till now, none of the postings have been released. We are in the third quarter, but since this year officers’ postings have come out more than four times while soldier’s postings are nonexistent.”
The soldiers expressed deep dissatisfaction with the treatment they receive from their superiors, alleging that their welfare is neglected in favor of officers. They claimed that this disparity has led to a surge in soldiers seeking retirement or even fleeing the military without proper paperwork due to the suffering they endure. The soldiers emphasized the urgent need for the Chief of Army Staff to take action, calling for the removal of the Chief of Personnel Management and the Infantry Corp Commander if they cannot fulfill their responsibilities.
As of now, the Nigerian Army has not responded to the soldiers’ petition addressed to the Chief of Army Staff.
