Nigeria’s Delegate to IPU Demands Transparent Probe into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Akpabio

A Nigerian delegate at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, Kafilat Ogbara, has called for an independent and transparent investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Ogbara, who chairs the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, urged the National Assembly to ensure due process and safeguard all parties involved from intimidation and retaliation.

Allegations and Calls for Justice

The allegations surfaced during the IPU meeting in New York, where Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised concerns about her six-month suspension from the Senate and accused Akpabio of sexual misconduct. She described her suspension as a punitive measure for speaking out against alleged unethical practices within the Nigerian legislature.

Akpoti-Uduaghan called for international intervention, emphasizing that her struggle extends beyond personal grievances, representing the silenced voices of Nigerian women facing similar challenges.

In response, IPU President Tulia Ackson assured that the matter would be addressed, allowing both the Nigerian Senate and Akpoti-Uduaghan to present their respective positions.

Institutional Integrity and Due Process

At a press briefing at the United Nations headquarters, Ogbara stressed the need for a rigorous, unbiased probe into the allegations. She outlined key expectations, including a thorough investigation, protection of involved individuals, and accountability in handling the case.

“Upholding institutional integrity requires that due process be followed strictly,” she stated. “As representatives of the people, we must ensure justice, fairness, and transparency, while also preventing intimidation or retaliation.”

Ogbara reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to justice and human rights, pledging that the National Assembly would continue to fight gender-based violence and discrimination through legislative reforms.

“Nigeria recognizes the severity of sexual harassment allegations and the need for an impartial investigation,” she noted. “Justice should not be predetermined or one-sided. We must uphold women’s rights and ensure our legal frameworks remain strong.”

Senate’s Stance on Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension

Despite Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims, the Nigerian Senate maintains that her suspension was based on violations of Senate Standing Rules and not in retaliation for her allegations against Akpabio. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele defended the decision, stating that it followed procedural guidelines.

However, the timing of the suspension—minutes after Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly accused Akpabio—raises critical questions. Critics argue that it underscores a troubling pattern of silencing dissenting voices within Nigeria’s political landscape.

International and Domestic Reactions

The controversy has sparked reactions both within Nigeria and internationally, with calls for greater scrutiny of the allegations and the Senate’s actions. Ogbara acknowledged the sensitivity of the case, emphasizing the importance of considering all perspectives before reaching conclusions.

“While Senator Natasha has raised valid concerns about her treatment, it is equally crucial to allow the Senate President to respond to these allegations. A fair and transparent resolution is paramount,” she said.

With increasing international attention, the Nigerian government faces mounting pressure to demonstrate its commitment to justice and accountability. Whether the probe into Akpabio’s alleged misconduct will be genuinely independent remains to be seen.
