105 Million NINs Issued
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has hit a significant milestone by issuing over 105 million NINs to Nigerians and legal residents so far. However, the commission is not resting on its laurels, setting an ambitious target to capture the country’s over 200 million population within the next two years.
This revelation came from NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, during a recent media engagement. Adegoke reiterated the commission’s commitment to streamlining its processes and leveraging technology to accelerate the enrollment and data modification exercise across the nation.
Under the leadership of its new Director-General, Engineer Abisoye Coker, who assumed office in August 2023, the NIMC has introduced a self-service portal that allows Nigerians to remotely modify their personal data, including names, dates of birth, email addresses, and phone numbers. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes strengthening the national identification system.
Adegoke highlighted the efficiency gains from the self-service portal, stating that modifications can now be completed within 24-48 hours, a significant improvement from the past when individuals had to wait months for such updates.
Additionally, the NIMC official clarified the distinction between the self-service portal and the commission’s existing mobile app. While the app primarily serves for identification and linking mobile numbers to NINs, the self-service portal is solely dedicated to data modification, a function not available on the app.
As the NIMC continues its nationwide enrollment drive, the commission’s focus remains on ensuring that every Nigerian and legal resident obtains a NIN, a crucial step towards streamlining access to government services, enhancing security, and promoting digital inclusion.
With over 95 million Nigerians yet to be captured, the NIMC undoubtedly faces a daunting task. However, the commission’s determination, combined with its adoption of innovative technologies and process improvements, instills confidence in its ability to achieve the ambitious 200 million NIN target within the stated timeframe.
Stakeholders across various sectors will keenly monitor the NIMC’s progress, as the success of this exercise has far-reaching implications for governance, service delivery, and the overall digital transformation agenda of the nation.
