NNPP Suspends Senator Kawu, Three Lawmakers Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano has announced the suspension of Senator Sumaila Kawu, who represents Kano South Senatorial District, alongside three other federal lawmakers over alleged anti-party activities.

The suspended lawmakers include Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya Federal Constituency), Ali Madakin Gini (Dala Federal Constituency), and Sani Abdullahi Rogo (Rogo/Karaye Federal Constituency).

Announcing the decision at the party’s secretariat in Kano on Monday, NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa accused the legislators of undermining the party’s interests and deviating from its core principles.

“These members were elected under the NNPP platform, but their actions have since contradicted the party’s norms and values. They were given complimentary tickets during the elections, yet they have chosen to work against the party’s interests,” Dungurawa stated.

He emphasized that their suspension was necessitated by their continued disregard for party unity and discipline.

“We have observed that these four lawmakers—Senator Kawu Sumaila, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, Ali Madakin Gini, and Sani Abdullahi Rogo—are no longer functioning in alignment with the NNPP’s objectives. Their actions have been detrimental to the party’s progress, and after careful deliberation, we found it necessary to suspend them,” Dungurawa added.

Citing a recent event as an example of their alleged disloyalty, Dungurawa noted that Senator Kawu Sumaila commissioned projects without extending an invitation to the NNPP leadership. Instead, key figures from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, were present at the event.

This development comes amid speculations of defections from the NNPP to the APC. Over the weekend, Abdullahi Ganduje hinted at ongoing negotiations to welcome senior NNPP officials, senators, and other legislators into the APC.

The suspension of these lawmakers signals a deepening internal crisis within the NNPP as it struggles to maintain party cohesion ahead of the next political cycle.
