No Security Threat in Abuja, FG Assures Amid US Embassy Alert

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reassured the public, diplomatic missions, and investors that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, remains safe, amid growing concerns following a security advisory issued by the United States Embassy in Nigeria.

In a statement released on Monday, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, downplayed any immediate threats to the capital city, responding to a U.S. alert restricting embassy staff and their families from visiting Nigerian military or government facilities in Abuja due to unspecified security concerns.

The U.S. Embassy had cited “increased security concerns arising from current global developments,” stating that its employees and their families were prohibited from engaging in non-official travel to government or military sites within Abuja at this time.

However, the Nigerian government emphasized that the advisory appeared to be a precautionary measure rather than a reaction to any credible or specific threat within Nigeria’s capital.

“While the Federal Government recognizes and respects the right of foreign missions, including the U.S. Embassy, to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is important to state categorically that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike,” Idris said.

The Minister further assured that Nigeria’s security and intelligence architecture in the FCT remains robust and effective, citing recent successes in detecting and neutralizing potential threats.

“Our security agencies are working around the clock to ensure the continued safety of residents. The current security setup has not only been proactive but has also achieved significant gains in preventing and neutralizing threats before they escalate,” he added.

Idris also stressed that the U.S. advisory was likely a reflection of global instability, particularly due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and should not be misinterpreted as a sign of deteriorating local conditions.

“We understand that the U.S. advisory is based on general global developments and does not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the FCT. We reiterate to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the general public that there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving Abuja’s reputation as one of the safest capital cities in Africa.

“We encourage Nigerians to go about their lawful activities without fear. While citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, there is no reason to panic,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has issued a broader “worldwide caution” alert, warning Americans abroad of potential security risks in light of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The advisory cited potential for disruptions in travel, temporary airspace closures, and demonstrations targeting U.S. interests overseas.

The Nigerian government reiterated its readiness to respond decisively to any emerging threat, while calling on the public to remain calm and cooperative with security agencies.
