Odua Nation Agitators’ Incursion in Ondo

Tensions are simmering in Nigeria’s Ondo State as the regional command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has directed its personnel to be on high alert against potential threats from Odua nation agitators and other miscreants.

In a statement issued after the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, the Ondo NSCDC State Commandant, Commandant Ibiloye Oluyemi, ordered divisional officers and tactical teams to maintain a state of readiness to swiftly counter any security breaches or unrest within the state’s borders.

The heightened alert follows recent incidents in neighboring Oyo State, where Yoruba nation agitators reportedly invaded government premises, raising fears of a spillover effect as the separatist movement gains traction in the Southwest region.

According to the NSCDC spokesperson, DSC Aidamenbor Daniel, critical units such as the Intelligence Department, Armed Squad, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Rapid Response Squad, and Operations have been placed on red alert. Their mission is to forestall any attempt by non-state actors to disrupt the peace and public order in Ondo.

Commandant Oluyemi emphasized the need for his personnel to maintain professionalism and remain apolitical, particularly in light of the ongoing political activities and rallies by various parties across the state. He stressed that ensuring public safety during these events remains a top priority for the Corps.

The NSCDC’s proactive stance underscores the delicate security situation in parts of southwestern Nigeria, where calls for the creation of an independent Yoruba nation have amplified in recent years. While the agitation remains largely restricted to peaceful protests, concerns persist about the potential for violence and breakdowns in law and order.

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, all eyes will be on how security agencies across the region respond to emerging threats while upholding citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression and association.

In Ondo, the NSCDC has made its stance clear – it remains committed to safeguarding lives, properties, and critical national assets and infrastructure within the confines of the law. The coming weeks will test the Corps’ operational readiness and capacity to deftly navigate this combustible situation.
