A prominent chieftain of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, to resign his position for the best interest of the party.

Dr. Farah Dagogo, a former member of the National Assembly from Rivers State, made this call in the wake of the 98th meeting of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) held recently.

Dagogo described the outcome of the NEC meeting, which saw Damagum retain his position as acting chairman until the next NEC meeting in August, as a demonstration of the party’s resilience in weathering any storm.

However, he believes that by the adjourned date in August, Damagum will have realized that it is in the party’s best interest for him to vacate the position and pave the way for “a more purposeful and result-oriented leadership.”

According to Dagogo, the tension and speculations surrounding the NEC meeting were orchestrated by a few individuals who desired to undermine the party’s leadership and direction, in a bid to further their own political fortunes.

He commended the political maturity and sagacity displayed by the party’s leader and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and other leaders, which prevented the PDP from falling into the trap laid by these individuals.

“The Party, however, did not play into the hands of those individuals who wanted the party to implode in order to improve their political fortunes, thanks in good measure to the political maturity and sagacity employed by the Party’s National Leader and Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, along with other leaders, before and during the NEC Meeting,” Dagogo said.

The PDP chieftain expressed optimism that by August, Damagum would have realized the need to step aside for the greater good of the party, acknowledging the sacrifices made by party leaders to keep the PDP united and focused.

Dagogo’s call for Damagum’s resignation highlights the internal dynamics and power struggles within the PDP, as the party seeks to regroup and present a united front ahead of future electoral battles.
