PDP in Disarray: Jandor Declares Party Has Lost Faith in Itself

The internal crisis plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to deepen, as former Lagos State governorship candidate, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has declared that the party has effectively given up on itself.

Jandor, who resigned from the PDP on Monday, cited the festering leadership crisis at the national level as a key reason for his departure. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, he expressed disappointment over the state of the party, asserting that its ongoing internal struggles have eroded public confidence.

Leadership Crisis and Internal Divisions

The PDP has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership tussle since the controversial removal of its former National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. The acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has faced mounting criticism, with many members holding him responsible for the party’s worsening fortunes.

One of the most contentious issues fueling the PDP’s instability is the dispute over the position of National Secretary. Both Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, lay claim to the role, further complicating the party’s internal structure.

In addition to this, divisions within the Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Working Committee (NWC), and the National Executive Committee (NEC) have further weakened the party’s unity. A recent Zonal Congress held in the South-South on February 22, without the approval of the region’s governors, has only deepened these rifts, raising questions about the party’s organizational coherence.

Public Perception and the Future of the PDP

Jandor did not mince words in his criticism of the PDP’s declining credibility. “Who goes around posting that they are a member of PDP these days? With what is happening at both the national and state levels, the optics are bad. Even the party itself has given up,” he remarked.

According to him, the PDP’s internal toxicity has allowed those who previously worked against the party to now lead it, further entrenching the culture of discord. He argued that with congresses set for 2025 and primaries slated for 2026, the party is unlikely to see any meaningful transformation if the same individuals remain in control.

“If you still have the same set of people in charge, you can’t expect different results,” Jandor asserted.

Jandor’s Political Future and the Uncertain Landscape

Despite his resignation, Jandor has yet to announce his next political move. He acknowledged the availability of 17 other political parties in Nigeria but stated that he would take time to consult before making a decision.

“There are also coalitions forming, with people coming together to explore new possibilities,” he noted, hinting at a possible alignment with emerging political forces.

Regardless of his next steps, he affirmed his commitment to respecting the leadership and guiding principles of any political platform he chooses.

“This is the path we have chosen, and we are not deviating. Only God determines the future,” he concluded.

The Broader Implications for the PDP

The PDP’s ongoing crisis has raised serious concerns about its viability as a strong opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections. With internal divisions escalating and key figures like Jandor exiting the party, the PDP risks further fragmentation.

Unless decisive action is taken to address the leadership struggles, unify warring factions, and rebuild public confidence, the party’s relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape may continue to diminish. The months leading up to the 2025 congresses will be crucial in determining whether the PDP can salvage itself or slide further into political irrelevance.
