PDP Shrinks Again: Only 10 States Left Under Its Control After Akwa Ibom Governor’s Defection

Nigeria’s political pendulum has swung yet again this time with a heavy blow to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The defection of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further eroded the strength of Nigeria’s once-dominant opposition party.

Governor Eno’s surprise move was made public at a high-level gathering at the Government House in Uyo, where he formally declared allegiance to the APC. While some political observers had speculated on his dissatisfaction with the PDP, the timing and final decision have sent shockwaves through the party’s base and added momentum to the APC’s growing political dominance.

This defection means that the PDP now controls just 10 states across Nigeria, down from 11. Once a political powerhouse with national reach, the party continues to suffer from high-profile defections, internal discord, and dwindling influence raising serious concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Below is the current list of PDP-controlled states:

  1. Adamawa
  2. Bauchi
  3. Bayelsa
  4. Enugu
  5. Osun
  6. Oyo
  7. Plateau
  8. Rivers
  9. Taraba
  10. Zamfara

With the APC now controlling the majority of Nigeria’s 36 states, and the Labour Party making inroads in urban areas, the PDP faces an uphill battle not just to reclaim power but to remain relevant.

In light of these political realignments, analysts say the PDP must either reinvent itself or risk further fragmentation, especially as the nation approaches a critical political crossroad.
