Police Demand Suspension of Osun LG Polls Over Security, Legal Concerns
In a dramatic turn of events just hours before the scheduled local government elections in Osun State, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to suspend the polls, citing imminent security threats and legal uncertainties.
Security Threats Loom Over Osun LG Elections
The police revealed that intelligence assessments indicate a high likelihood of violence if the elections proceed. According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, various groups, including political factions and external interests, are mobilizing to disrupt public peace and derail the democratic process.
“The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned local government elections proceed in Osun State,” Adejobi stated.
The tense political climate in Osun has been exacerbated by the ongoing rivalry between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), each contesting the legitimacy of past and present local government administrations.
Attorney General Calls for Election Suspension
Adding to the pressure, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had earlier advised Governor Adeleke to halt the elections. Fagbemi referenced a Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which overturned an earlier Federal High Court judgment that had nullified local government elections conducted under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
The legal back-and-forth has further complicated the political situation, raising concerns over the legitimacy of any election conducted under the current circumstances.
Police Warn of Possible Unrest
The police statement emphasized that while security agencies are prepared to contain any potential violence, suspending the elections would be a proactive measure to ensure public safety and stability.
“Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability,” Adejobi warned.
The force also stressed that holding the elections amid such volatility could trigger widespread unrest, endangering lives and property.
Legal Uncertainties Undermine Poll Credibility
Beyond security concerns, the police also pointed to legal complications surrounding the elections. The Court of Appeal ruling on February 22, 2025, has cast doubt on the validity of local government administration in Osun, further strengthening the argument for a suspension.
“In light of the combination of heightened security threats and the existing legal complexities, the Nigeria Police Force advises the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections immediately,” the statement added.
Political Fallout and Government Stance
Despite mounting pressure, Governor Adeleke has remained resolute in his decision to proceed with the elections. However, with both the police and the Attorney General advocating for suspension, the governor faces a tough decision.
The PDP and APC, already locked in fierce disputes over local governance, may use the current crisis to further their political agendas. The coming days will determine whether Adeleke will yield to the growing calls for postponement or push ahead, risking potential chaos.
The Osun LG elections have become a flashpoint for legal and security tensions, underscoring deeper political divisions within the state. The police warning is not just a call for caution—it is a clear indication that failure to act responsibly could lead to dire consequences. Whether Governor Adeleke heeds the warning or proceeds with the elections, the implications for Osun’s stability and democratic credibility remain significant.
