Remi Tinubu Advocates Urgent Action to Curb Maternal and Child Mortality

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality through strategic and community-based healthcare initiatives.

Speaking during a high-level engagement with traditional rulers in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the critical role of grassroots participation in tackling the persistent health challenges facing women and children across the country.

She urged monarchs to actively support the Renewed Hope Initiative by educating their subjects on the availability of free healthcare services, including treatment for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

“We are here to encourage our frontline health workers by providing them with incentives and publicly acknowledging their invaluable contributions,” the First Lady stated.

“We are confident that with adequate support, maternal and infant mortality rates will decline substantially. We are also intensifying awareness on HIV/AIDS, particularly to combat the high rate of mother-to-child transmission.”

She further stressed that traditional institutions remain instrumental to the success of public health campaigns, especially in rural communities where their influence is profound.

Also speaking at the event, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, disclosed that over 8,500 frontline health workers have been trained across the North-East, including 1,300 from Taraba State.

He noted that more than 1,000 healthcare centres in the region benefit from quarterly funding under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), with 170 of those located within Taraba.

“These interventions are part of deliberate efforts by the Federal Government to ensure resources reach the critical points where healthcare services are delivered,” Pate affirmed.

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, and his wife, Agyin Kefas, commended the First Lady for her impactful visit and the support extended to the state through the Renewed Hope Initiative.

During the visit, Senator Tinubu distributed 10,000 professional kits to midwives serving across the six states of the North-East and presented a ₦50 million cheque to empower 1,000 women in Taraba State.
