The political tensions in Rivers State have escalated as the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Tony Okocha, the APC caretaker chairman in Rivers, issued this demand during a press conference held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. He stated that the party would not tolerate any insults directed at President Bola Tinubu by the governor.
Okocha argued that Fubara’s actions and statements towards the President were unacceptable, and the party would not stand idly by. “It’ll be foolhardy for us to sit down and see someone way less than Mr. President insult him under our very nose,” he said.
Additionally, Okocha accused Fubara of espousing impunity and intimidation against APC members, which he deemed an absurdity.
The APC chairman further threatened to invoke party discipline against Assembly members if they fail to restart the impeachment proceedings against the governor. “We are directing APC members who are in the Assembly to immediately commence the impeachment of Governor Sim Fubara,” Okocha stated. “And if they don’t do that, there’s what they call Party discipline, and we shall invoke that section of the Constitution and deal decisively with them.”
This escalation comes in the wake of Governor Fubara’s criticism of the Rivers State House of Assembly’s attitude towards his administration. On Monday, Fubara questioned the legitimacy of the legislators, stating that their existence as Assembly members was contingent upon his recognition, predicated on the Peace Accord initiated by President Tinubu.
The governor’s remarks have clearly ruffled feathers within the APC, leading to their demand for impeachment proceedings. The party seems determined to protect the President’s image and assert its authority in the state.
As the political drama unfolds in Rivers State, it remains to be seen how the House of Assembly will respond to the APC’s demands and whether the impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara will gain traction. The situation underscores the ongoing power struggle and heightened tensions between the ruling party and the state government.
