PORT HARCOURT – The factional leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, led by Mr. Nname Ewor, has strongly opposed the impeachment notice issued against Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his deputy by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Ewor criticized the move, stating that the impeachment attempt was not aligned with the February 28 Supreme Court ruling. He urged the faction led by Speaker Martins Amaewule to prioritize peace and adhere strictly to the court’s directives rather than instigating further political tension in the state.

“The Supreme Court judgment did not include the removal of the governor. Therefore, any contemplation of impeachment at this moment is unwarranted, especially since Governor Fubara is working towards implementing the ruling,” Ewor stated.

He further called on the governor to expedite the implementation of the Supreme Court’s decision and to restore stability at the local government level by conducting fresh elections.

“We urge Governor Fubara to remain committed to the full implementation of the judgment. Since he has already dissolved the former local government chairmen and councillors in line with the ruling, it is imperative that he facilitates new elections to ensure administrative stability,” he added.

Ewor also emphasized the need for the re-presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill, urging the state lawmakers to cooperate in the interest of governance rather than obstructing legislative proceedings.

“The governor’s initial attempt to present the budget was resisted by the lawmakers. However, we anticipate a more constructive outcome in the rescheduled budget presentation on March 19,” he noted.

In a final appeal, Ewor advised Governor Fubara to remain focused on governance and ignore the impeachment notice, as it is not a directive of the Supreme Court. He also called on all political actors in the state to embrace peace and support efforts geared towards stabilizing the government.

The impeachment saga has further exposed the deepening factional crisis within the Rivers State political landscape, raising concerns about potential disruptions to governance and development in the state.
