Senator Ishaku Abbo, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and his associates of being behind the rumors about his alleged plan to impeach Akpabio. Abbo claims that this narrative was orchestrated by Akpabio to create divisions between President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and northern politicians.
Akpabio has vehemently denied these allegations
Akpabio has vehemently denied these allegations of an impending impeachment, dismissing them as false and malicious. Reports emerged suggesting plans to unseat Akpabio as the President of the 10th Senate when it reconvenes on September 26, 2023. It was alleged that two prominent senators from the North West, along with other senators, were strategizing to carry out this move, citing concerns that Akpabio was perceived as a rubber stamp for the presidency and might not effectively fulfill his duties.
Abbo, responding to these reports, stated that he woke up to headlines about a plan to impeach Senator Akpabio by northern senators.
Senator Ishaku Abbo response to Impeachment
He claimed that this news was intentionally propagated by Akpabio’s camp to create discord between President Tinubu and the North. Abbo urged Akpabio to restrain his camp, emphasizing that sowing seeds of discord and ethno-religious division would not benefit the country.
The senator expressed frustration over the Senate’s treatment as a conquered territory, particularly in committee allocations and resource distribution. Abbo pointed out discrepancies in committee chairmanships and questioned the fairness of leadership appointments in the Senate.
He also criticized the screening process for ministerial nominees, highlighting the absence of the Senate President during plenary and the subsequent clearance of certain nominees without Senate deliberation. Abbo raised concerns about communication from security agencies to the Senate and questioned whether the Senate was being used in power plays by presidential aides.
