BALOCHISTAN, PAKISTAN – A separatist attack on Pakistan’s Jaffar Express on Tuesday has once again underscored the volatile security situation in Balochistan. Militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) opened fire on the train, injuring the driver and allegedly taking hostages, a claim that remains unverified by officials.

The attack occurred in the Mushqaf area of Bolan district as the train, carrying around 400 passengers in nine bogies, was en route from Quetta to Peshawar. Railway and police officials confirmed that security forces were immediately deployed to the scene to contain the crisis. However, the extent of the militants’ control over the train or their exact demands remains unclear.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind announced the implementation of emergency measures and the mobilization of all relevant institutions to address the situation. Yet, this reaction once again highlights the ongoing failure of authorities to preemptively curb militant activities in the region.
The BLA, which has been waging a decades-long insurgency against the Pakistani state, has repeatedly targeted government forces, infrastructure, and foreign interests, particularly those linked to China. The group claims to be fighting for Balochistan’s independence, arguing that the federal government exploits the province’s vast gas and mineral wealth while offering little in return to its people.
