Sexual Harassment Petition Against Nigeria’s Senate President Dismissed Amid Procedural Violations
The petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, alleging sexual harassment by Nigeria’s Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has been dismissed due to procedural violations and legal constraints.
On Wednesday, the ethics committee, tasked with reviewing the allegations, ruled that the petition failed to adhere to the Senate’s rules. According to the committee’s chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, the document was personally signed by Uduaghan instead of being endorsed by another individual, as required by Senate procedures.
Akpabio has categorically denied the allegations, stating that he has always upheld respect for women and was even recognized as the “most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria” during his tenure. He also pointed out that he was raised by a single mother who instilled in him strong moral values.
Uduaghan’s claims have sparked controversy, with some Nigerians calling for an independent investigation. However, her accusations, which likened Akpabio’s alleged behavior to that of a university lecturer failing a student who refused to sleep with him, lack concrete evidence beyond her assertions.
Notably, her petition was submitted directly during a plenary session, with Akpabio himself allowing its presentation—an action inconsistent with the behavior of someone attempting to suppress the issue. Additionally, her claims rest primarily on verbal insinuations rather than verifiable proof, raising concerns about their credibility.
The case has drawn mixed reactions from the public. While some activists demand further inquiry, others view the petition’s dismissal as a reflection of its weak procedural basis. The presence of opposing protest groups in Abuja—one supporting Akpabio and the other backing Uduaghan—further highlights the divided opinions on the matter.
Akpabio, a seasoned politician, previously served as governor of Akwa Ibom state for eight years and as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari. His leadership and track record contrast sharply with the unproven allegations leveled against him, prompting observers to question whether political motivations or personal vendettas might be at play in Uduaghan’s accusations.
