Indefinite strike: The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria have jointly announced an indefinite strike set to commence on October 3, 2023. The decision to embark on the strike was reached during separate Emergency National Executive Council (INEC) meetings held by both labor unions in Abuja.

NLC President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Festus Osifo made this announcement in a joint communique following their meetings. The primary reason cited for the indefinite strike is the perceived insensitivity of the government to the hardships faced by Nigerians as a result of the removal of petrol subsidies. Additionally, the unions expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s continued unwillingness and lack of initiative in addressing these concerns.

During the indefinite strike, the NLC and TUC have called on their state chapters to mobilize for protests across the country. This move comes after the NLC had previously conducted a two-day warning strike on Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, June 6, 2023.

In response to this development, Minister of Labour and Employment Simon Lalong has appealed to the NLC leadership to reconsider the planned strike. Lalong assured the labor unions that the Federal Government is committed to addressing the issues and concerns raised by the NLC and TUC.

The impending indefinite strike raises concerns about its potential impact on various sectors of the Nigerian economy and the well-being of the general population. As both sides engage in negotiations and dialogue, the nation watches closely, hoping for a resolution that will alleviate the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.
